It’s disappointing but not terribly surprising to hear that Girls5Eva has been axed after three seasons. Peacock traded it to Netflix after its first two seasons, and it seemed like the kind of show that would catch fire on Netflix. But viewers never came around to it, which is a real shame: comedies that actually contain jokes (ahem, The Bear) are a rarity, and this one was among the best. All three seasons are still on Netflix, and it’s definitely worth checking out.
I am a little surprised that FX canceled Old Man after two seasons, although I’m not particularly disappointed. The first season of the series, starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, was an absolute banger, but the second season — which seemed to arrive half a century later — lost much of its mojo. It was still watchable and occasionally entertaining, but too often felt stuck in neutral.
I’ll also mention that FreeVee, Amazon’s FAST service that no longer exists, has canceled Dinner with Friends after one season. I’ve never even heard of this show.
The rest is all good news. Take, for instance, the renewal of Silo for two more seasons, bringing it to a fourth and final season, which will allow Apple TV+ to complete the story written in Hugh Howey’s novels. I loved the first season, although I’ll concede that the second season, so far, feels like it’s setting the table for subsequent seasons. But Rebecca Ferguson is terrific, and I’m enjoying the addition of Steve Zahn.
In other renewal news, Netflix quickly — and appropriately — renewed Mike Schur’s A Man on the Inside. The Ted Danson show is basically perfect, except for its title: it’s so bland that I never remember it. I just think of it as Mike Schur’s retirement home show with Ted Danson. It’s unbelievably good and makes for great holiday viewing with the family if you haven’t seen it yet.
Bill Lawrence’s Bad Monkey has also been picked up for a second season. I didn’t love the first season, but I liked it a lot, and it’s the perfect vehicle for Vince Vaughn. I could watch him play this role for years. I also appreciate that, while Bill Lawrence is one of my all-time favorites, this series feels a little different from his usual comedy/whiplash poignancy formula.
It seems folks have been enjoying Prime Video’s Secret Level, an adult-animated anthology series featuring original stories set within the worlds of popular video games, as the streamer picked it up for a second season within a week of its release. Prime Video says it was their largest adult animated release ever.
Finally, for those who might care, The Kelly Clarkson Show has been picked up for a seventh season, and Netflix has renewed its Japanese dating game show, The Boyfriend.
