People Are Protesting Jonathan Majors’ New Movie (But Not Why You Think)

One of the jobs I’ve worked involved working with an older British woman who baked treats for customers. We’d have a lovely chat anytime I passed her in the kitchen. She would want to talk about movies, books, and the weather. Ya know, normal stuff. And, toward the end of her tenure, she would start pulling me aside and slyly whisper in what I can only describe as a cheeky British manner, “What do you think of this ’ Me Too’ business? I think it’s a big witch hunt.”

My response was always the same: “They never caught any witches, Wendy.” But I never changed her mind. As opposed to the actual witch hunts, we as a society were finding out about people who had actually committed crimes. They weren’t women who owned property or were good at math; they were actors and executives who had abused people, and only a few of them were even facing consequences, and even those varied from case to case. But Wendy was not the only person who was ridiculously skeptical.

Plenty of folks have treated the Me Too era like some pox on men that they did not deserve. They think it was a pointless crusade that targeted men for no reason. It sucks, and we continue to see the fallout of that attitude. Louis C.K. is getting a frigging Netflix special this summer (after he already got a Grammy in 2022) for Christ’s sake. And that leads me to Jonathan Majors. While his downfall took place after the Me Too era, he is yet another man who was accused of and convicted of committing assault, lost his big Marvel job, and now he’s crawling back.

The former MCU star is going to be in a Daily Wire movie that’s being compared to Red Dawn (goody), and people are protesting it, but not for all of the reasons I mentioned. According to Deadline, crew members recently walked off the set of the film due to a “series of labor issues.” Now, IATSE (the labor union) is protesting the shoot, which is taking place in South Carolina. The film is being produced by Ben Shapiro and Dallas Sonnier, and the latter’s response to the strike is about as childish and disrespectful as you’d expect.

Every aspect of this story sucks eggs. Not only is it lame to see Majors be given a “comeback,” but the idea that the Daily Wire is out here trying to make movies while being awful to crew members makes it even worse. Their dismissive response is the sour cherry on top. Cancel culture isn’t real, famous men often don’t face consequences for their crimes, and Ben Shapiro gets to make movies because he pivoted from being a failed screenwriter to running a money-making outrage machine. I hate it here.
