The picture that emerged of Jonathan Majors over the course of the last year in the investigation and trial of the actor for assaulting ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari has not been flattering. It is clear from the accounts of Jabarri that Majors was abusive, controlling, and violent. A NYTimes piece that included interviews with over 20 people, including two ex-girlfriends, paints an even more damning picture.
Another ex-girlfriend, Emma Duncan, speaking on the record for the first time, said that Majors emotionally and physically abused her, throwing her around and choking her. At various points with Duncan, he threatened to strangle her or kill her, and he threw her across a room, threw her to the ground, told her to kill herself, and told her that he would make sure she couldn’t have children. After many of these instances, Majors repeated a pattern familiar to accounts described by Jabbari: He would apologize and threaten to kill himself.
Maura Hooper, an ex-girlfriend who dated Majors when they were both at Yale, described a similar pattern of abuse: A boyfriend who controlled their relationship, prevented her from speaking out about it, and cut off her support network, leaving her without anyone to talk to when Majors dropped her off to get an abortion but refused to pick her up afterward. When she found out he had cheated on her and confronted him, Majors again threatened to kill himself. A year after they broke up, when Hooper dated a mutual acquaintance, Majors called her on the phone, called her a “whore,” and told her, “I hope you die; kill yourself” and “I’m going to rip you out of my heart the way they ripped our baby out of you.”
Crew members on the set of Lovecraft Country have also asserted that Majors could be testy and argumentative and that female crew members were often warned to keep their distance. One first assistant director said that Majors once dressed her down and told her, “You’re no longer welcome here.”
Through his attorney, Majors either denied, rationalized, or excused the allegations.
