I love going to movie theaters! It’s one of my favorite things to do. I sit back (mostly) undistracted and get carried away by a story for anywhere between one and a half and three and a half hours. It’s the best. Have people with poor manners disrupted it at times? Absolutely! But so have plenty of things in my life. If the dweebs and jerks kept me from enjoying things, I wouldn’t do anything. Instead, I’ve spent decades going to countless movies, but I still remember one of my absolute best experiences.

To be fair, part of what made this particular trip to the movies so special was that no one else was in my section of the theater. My seat was in the balcony at the AMC Lincoln Square theater in NYC, and I had it all to myself. I had been working a terrible day job at the time, with many early mornings spent checking people in for tours of Ellis Island. But my days off were Tuesday and Wednesday, so I would often take advantage of reduced crowds. This day was a prime example of that.

I sat alone in that balcony, clad in 3-D glasses. My pockets had been filled with caramel M&Ms (which I think were new at the time). I bought some nachos and a seltzer, and I had a THC vape, which I could hit pretty regularly because no one was in my section at all. It was just a wonderful afternoon, and, even though it happened ten years ago, and I’ve had plenty of good movie-going experiences since then, it still holds a large piece of my heart. As does the movie I saw: Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Holy cow, what a motion picture! I had not seen it on a big screen before, and it truly is a different experience. The chases, shootouts, and corny jokes feel bigger and grander. The T-1000 looked incredible, even after 25 years. Everything about it held up remarkably well. Few people can direct action like James Cameron, and few films show that more clearly than T2.

Haven’t seen it on a big screen? You’re in luck! Deadline is reporting that T2 will be returning to theaters this August for the 35th anniversary. Cameron released a statement celebrating the rerelease, saying, “T2 was made for theaters, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film. I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence! And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.” It’s pretty rich to see Cameron talk about the evils of AI as he… sits on the board of an AI company, but okay, James.

Regardless of Cameron’s hypocrisy, the movie still rips, and you should go see it in a big theater! Movie theaters are wonderful, and Cameron is right, T2 is made for them. Grab yourself some snacks, wait until the lights begin to dim, and enjoy the magic. That’s why we come to these places, right? Right?!
