MCU Star Was ‘Disappointed’ by Their Death in ‘Multiverse of Madness'

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will always have a… strange place in my heart. It came out a little over a year after my kids were born, and I had barely been going to the movies (both because of being a new dad and because of COVID). Sunday night during the film’s opening weekend, I decided on a whim to go and see it. It was the first time I had been out alone in a while, and I decided to load up on some THC on the way, and boy, oh boy, did I “succeed.”

I can hold my s***. I’ve been a THC user since I went to “college” in 2007, and I still use it pretty regularly. That’s not as much a brag as it is a statement of fact. However, my use went down leading up to and directly after my kids were born. Still, I thought I was fine and decided to do the following on the way to the film: I smoked a joint and a half while traveling and took two 25 mg gummies. Now, these were unsourceable gummies, and probably weren’t actually 25 mgs. Still, about ten minutes into the film, I said the classic, “these ain’t s***,” and took a third.

There is a particular moment in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness where Strange meets a host of heroes from another dimension who are variations of other heroes (or just ones he hasn’t met). Then, Wanda Maximoff shows up and just straight-up murders them. And that is all kicked off by a story about this team killing their version of Doctor Strange. It is all super intense and way more violent than anything I would have expected from Marvel. So, of course, this is when all alleged 75 mgs of THC kicked into high gear.

I was… aghast and uncomfortable. Still had a good time, and I enjoy that movie overall, but I don’t know if it’s due in part to me having such an experience. Regardless, that night will stay with me forever, and I wasn’t even the one with a “lame” death. But that’s what Hayley Atwell felt she was given in the film. A Captain Britain-type of Atwell’s Agent Carter was one of the multiverse heroes cut down in the film, and she recently complained about the film at a Sci-Fi convention in London.

Atwell explained to the crowd that she was “disappointed” by the events of the film, saying it was a “bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.” She thought the setup was fun, with her character behaving like Captain America, but that also made her death sting all the more. And while she tried to make suggestions for different angles, she was shot down. To be fair, it wasn’t exactly Atwell’s character, but I understand her frustration here. Agent Carter had a rad show, but this felt like another moment to cement her place in the MCU, and it was used for shock value instead.

Atwell will return for Avengers: Doomsday, so she may get another shot at a cool moment, but there’s already so much set to go on in that film that she could easily get brushed aside while Cap takes center stage. But, at the end of the day, neither Atwell nor I will forget her fateful scene in Multiverse of Madness. Just, ya know, for very different reasons.
