One of the best horror movies in recent years was Barbarian, Zach Cregger’s breakout film often billed as “the Airbnb horror flick.” It was a wild ride, made even better by the fact that most viewers had no idea what they were getting into. Credit to the trailer editors, who smartly held back major reveals, a luxury that comes with a modest $4.5 million budget and lower expectations.
That’s not the case with Weapons, Cregger’s much-anticipated follow-up. This time, he’s *the* guy who made Barbarian, and he’s working with a $40 million budget and a starrier cast—Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Josh Brolin. But he’s not quite at J.J. Abrams’ levels of secrecy, à la Cloverfield, so the marketing can’t afford to stay as cryptic.
The trailer? Fantastic. The premise? Compelling as hell. But maybe … don’t watch it. Maybe just go in cold. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until August 8 to see it in theaters.
