A First Look at the Superhero Series for People Who Don't Care About Superheroes

I have never been much of a comic book fan or a lover of superhero films. There are many that I like and almost none that I love. I have nothing against the genre whatsoever, but it’s not my thing. I like mystery-box shows and character dramas (and romcoms and heartfelt half-hour comedies).

There is a major exception, however. I read Alan Moore’s Watchmen. It wasn’t for me. I watched Zack Snyder’s adaptation. It also wasn’t for me (though I wasn’t alone in that regard). But Damon Lindelof’s HBO adaptation is not just my favorite “superhero” movie or television project, it’s one of my favorite television series, period.

And that is why I am stoked about the above photo. That’s the best everyman in the business, Kyle Chandler, alongside Aaron Pierre, who recently made a lot of folks stand up and take notice for his role in Jeremy Saulnier’s brilliant Netflix movie, Rebel Ridge, and “brilliant Netflix movie” is not something one hears very often.

Pierre and Chandler star here in Lanterns. It’s about the Green Lanterns, maybe the least interesting superheroes in the DC lineup. And yet, I cannot wait to see this series, which follows new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

So, it’s a murder mystery, but with dudes who hate the color yellow. Or something like that! Whatever it is, I can’t wait. It just began shooting, and that picture above is the first look.
