Katy Perry Saw What You 'Unhinged' Garbage People Said About Her

Earlier in the month, Katy Perry joined Gayle King, the pile of plastic known as Lauren Sanchez, and some other people I’ve never heard before on a Blue Origin flight into space. Let’s just say, it did not get the same reaction as William Shatner’s flight back in 2024. I want to unpack that for a minute.

I noticed a lot of people were quick to play the sexism card, and I’m not going to say that isn’t in the mix. It is a factor. However, a whole lot of pretty relevant context happened between Shatner and this latest flight. To be clear, both of these excursions were rightly derided as joy rides for the rich. That vibe just happened to be particularly prominent this time around thanks to slapping a pop star and morning talk show host onboard. More importantly, Bezos is to blame for the backlash.

To jog everyone’s memory, Bezos also racked up scorn after the Shatner flight by being more concerned with popping champagne than listening to TV’s Captain Kirk wax philosophical on the existential experience of seeing our fragile planet from space. Since then, Bezos became even more of a cartoon villain when he began leveraging the Washington Post in Donald Trump’s favor heading into the 2024 election. Like Meghan McCain, he gave Trump’s ring a good ol’ spit polish after he won. I mean, Christ, Bezos and Sanchez literally sat front row at the inauguration with the other billionaire tech giants that lubed up our current hellscape. If you want to know why the all-female flight didn’t go down as smoothly, there’s your answer.

Anyway, all Katy Perry knows is that people were mean to her online. Even Wendy’s dunked on her! Well, she had enough and decided to hop into the comments of a Brazilian fanpage where she blasted all of us losers.

Via Instagram:

I’m so grateful for you guys. We’re in this beautiful and wild journey together. I can continue to remain true to myself, heart open and honest especially because of our bond. I love you guys and have grown up together with you and am so excited to see you all over the world this year! Please know I am ok, I have done a lot work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me. My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, “no one can make you believe something about yourself that you don’t already believe about yourself” and if I ever do have any feelings about it then it’s an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it. When the “online” world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed. What’s real is seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth. I find people to lock eyes and sing with and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that ♾️ I’m not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary, I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but… I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level UNLOCKS ♥️

Look, Kayleigh did stellar work explaining why this latest Blue Origin flight was “peak girlboss nonsense,” and I highly recommend giving that a read because it will be way smarter than anything I have to say. In the meantime, while I’m not particularly concerned about Katy Perry’s feelings being hurt because people didn’t weep in the streets over her 11-minute joy ride complete with makeup sponsorship, I will concede that she dropped a banger of a line.

Calling the internet a “dumping ground” for the “unhinged and unhealed” is pretty spot on. They will literally let anybody write anything on here. I’m just some guy who gets excited about Arby’s, and yet, I’m allowed to spout off about a billion dollar franchise like I know what I’m talking about. It’s nuts! Who even invented this thing?

UPDATE: OK, I’m starting to see why Katy hates the internet so much. This TikTok is hilariously brutal and a joy to watch. I sent it to everyone I know. (Thanks, Seth!)
