Kaitlan Collins Is an Immovable Object (Complimentary)

The Daily Show scored a surprisingly impressive get for Monday night when Kaitlan Collins sat down with Jon Stewart just days after the president insulted both the CNN reporter and Dylan Mulvaney during his “roast” at the White House Correspondents Dinner. (I’m going to highly recommend Stewart’s take on that debacle.)

Full disclosure: I’m not a cable news guy at all. There was a very brief spat in the final years of the Bush administration when I watched MSNBC, but not a fan of the format. Anyway, my rambling point is that I wasn’t prepared for Collins’ unflappable poise. Just a total pro from top to bottom even as Stewart fired off zingers. Collins is all business, and that’s what makes her great at job.

Throughout the interview, Stewart voiced his frustration that journalists are exposing unfathomable level of corruption from this administration and nothing is happening. On brand for Stewart, he neglects to mention that all three branches of the government are currently controlled by one party, but Collins responds with her clear and concise job description. Ask the administration tough questions and let their answer, or lack thereof, speak for itself. She does not waver from that mission even when the President of the United States is fragging her with insults the moment she walks into the Oval Office. It’s not Collins’ job to change the country. That’s on the voters, who have failed miserably thanks to our nation’s severe detachment from reality. (Thanks, social media!)

However, Collins proved her effectiveness by sharing one vital fact from the Correspondents Dinner that decimated Trump. The videos of his performance were already bad enough, but according to Collins, the room was loaded with loyal staffers and supporters. Not one of them laughed. Just absolute silence during his entire “set.” It was especially poignant considering Stewart’s coverage made it a point to highlight how toadies like Pete Hegseth and Sean Duffy are trained to always laugh at Trump’s jokes. Not this night.
