The dust has settled on Stephen Colbert, so much so that his last episode was almost two weeks ago at this point! What?! I know I’m a dad and I talk often about how time is meaningless, as we all just watch the world keep on spinning whether we’re paying attention or not, leading to moments when suddenly it feels like years have gone by in an instant, reminding us every day that death is the only sure thing in life and we are all hurtling toward it at a blinding speed, but two weeks ago?!
I think part of it is the fact that I was so invested in the buildup, and there was so much. We knew that Colbert would be off the air for months in advance. There were constant references, rumors, and discussions about what his firing would mean for late-night. There were certainly plenty of post-mortems after the fact, as people came to grips with the idea that it was finally over. And now, we’re in the future, but Jon Stewart is still going to have a little fun.
After taking a little less than 20 minutes of The Daily Show to mock our current President (as he so often does), Stewart was joined by Olivia Munn, who came out congratulating him on his final show. If that sounds odd, it’s because it was not Stewart’s final show. Still, Munn insists he’s done, poking fun at the fact that he’s in a dying industry (something he acknowledges). She is then given a guitar and sings a song in his honor, one clearly meant for Stephen Colbert.
One of the most striking things about all of this is how easily Munn goes back to her Daily Show days. Her time as a correspondent was short-lived, but those skills clearly never went away. She’s able to nail that Daily Show delivery, which feels like someone mocking how a newscaster may usually talk. Munn also has fantastic timing and just made the whole bit feel really fun. It helps when you can have a walk-on and the person is not only a talented actor, but also has experience doing exactly what you need them to.
Stewart was off the week following Colbert’s last show, so it makes sense that he wouldn’t reference it until now. It still did a number on my already fragile grasp of time, though. I’m supposed to have moved on to the next thing dominating the news cycle, Jon! Like… never mind, I don’t want to touch any of… that.
