Is Meghan Markle Really Joining 'The Gentlemen'? Theo James Has Thoughts

Immediately following reports that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are returning to the UK, rumors started flying that Markle was not only eyeing a return to acting, but was in active talks to join Season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen.

Like all tabloid rumors, this situation has been in a constant state of flux depending on the hour of the day. Case in point, Theo James was asked about Markle’s potential casting ahead of the Season 2 premiere. His answer is both cheeky and nebulous, and should probably be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Via Town & Country:

When T&C asked James, who plays Eddie, the 13th Duke of Halstead, in the series, about the possibility of a certain ex-royal being on the show, he replied with a smile, “Yes, Fergie is joining. She’ll be playing my love interest.”

He continued, “No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air,” referring to the ongoing coverage of the Duchess of Sussex’s potential role in the series. “At the moment, we’re just trying to get as many eyes on season two, and then season three will happen soon. But in terms of story, we have the overarching ambition of where we’re going to go. We’re going to expand the world, go to different countries. But in terms of the minutiae, I mean, it’s still very much up in the air.”

Naturally, outlets that hate Meghan Markle framed this as James “shutting down” the casting rumors with his “a lot of hot air” remark. At most, he seems to be referring to the tabloid frenzy over what may or may not be early discussions. He doesn’t shut anything down, and if you do this magical thing called reading, James plainly says that the details of Season 3 are “still very much up in the air.” So, basically, Markle’s casting isn’t set in stone, but it’s not out the window either.

Also, it’s a safe bet that this situation is very similar to Andrew Garfield denying that he’s Avengers: Doomsday. What would be the purpose of confirming that now? This isn’t everybody’s first day on the internet.
