Is Andrew Garfield Lying About Being in a Marvel Movie Again?

There were a lot of issues with the Amazing Spider-Man films, but Andrew Garfield was not one of them. While I may have thought that his version of Peter Parker was a little too cool, that’s because Garfield is cool (and, if I remember correctly, they had him be a skateboarder). He was a good choice for the role, and we’ve only gotten to see him grow as an actor. Not only that, we got to see him return to the webhead years later and do even better.

Garfield’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home was so fantastic that reports started coming out that Sony wanted to make more Spider-Man movies with him and Tobey Maguire. Obviously, that has not happened yet. Instead, Tom Holland slapped on the tights once more for one of the highest-grossing domestic films ever. But that hasn’t stopped rumors about one or both of the Spider-Men appearing in the upcoming event film, Avengers: Doomsday.

If you take a casual stroll through MCU-dedicated accounts on Reddit, you’ll see claim after claim that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will appear in the mega-movie. Mostly, the threads suggest that Maguire will be the one to appear, doing things that… we won’t get into the specifics. Regardless, Garfield and Maguire have been a part of this game before, and only one of them has a movie coming out, so he’s the one getting peppered with questions.

While on the red carpet for The Uprising, Garfield was asked by Marc Malkin of Variety whether he was in Avengers: Doomsday. Garfield answered with a laugh, saying, “I’m not.” When pressed, because Garfield swore up and down that he was not in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield simply suggested: “You’ll find out, I suppose, one way or another.” He seems pretty believable, but, again, he’s a pretty fantastic actor and has probably gotten used to lying at this point.

He could very well be telling the truth, but, even with just a cursory glance, you can see that Garfield was filming two films in Europe last year: The Uprising and Artificial. The latter began shooting in San Francisco in July 2025 before moving to Italy and wrapping in October. Meanwhile, The Uprising started filming in September that same year and concluded in November. There’s a non-zero chance that Garfield could have popped over to the Doomsday set, which started rolling cameras in London in April of 2025 and stopped in September.

I’m almost having more fun thinking about what Doomsday could be. The promise of a big, universe-crossing movie is too exciting a prospect for me not to get excited about. But I could also end up being wildly disappointed if what is built up in my head does not come to fruition. That’ll be on me, but so far, thinking about the various ways the film could shake out has been a blast for my nerdy brain.
