Even Ben Affleck's Kids Are Dunking on His Love Life

In the mid-2010s, there was nothing that brought me more pleasure than seeing photos of Ben Affleck looking absolutely miserable. Vaping in his Charger, standing outside of buildings smoking, just put that right in my veins. Sure, he claims his drinking was out of control at the time — which he undiplomatically blamed Jennifer Garner for — but he was also in the middle of very cliched middle aged dude behavior like allegedly sleeping with the nanny (Remember that?) and buying a muscle car while getting a divorce. I’m clearly a bad person, but there was something deeply existential and poetic about seeing the current Batman hate life even though he had anything he could possibly want at his fingertips.

So with that in mind, I obviously found it hilarious that Ben Affleck tried to impart some wisdom on his children, only for their immediate reaction to be, “My guy, we have seen your life.” I also found it sadly relatable. Affleck just assumed he’d be the “cool dad” and not the constant and immediate butt of jokes. That’s the gut punch that keeps on giving.

Here’s what he told Jimmy Kimmel (via PEOPLE):

“My kids are talking at dinner and they’re talking about their friends and the drama and the relationships and I have some lived experience, I think, that’s worth sharing, some lessons,” Affleck said. “You know, these are the kind of things we give to our children.”

But when he tried to insert his thoughts into the story, his advice wasn’t as well received as he’d anticipated.

“I’ll say, ‘You know, well the thing about that relationship there…’ and the 17-year-old turns to me and goes, ‘Oh, like you’re the expert on relationships?’” Affleck quipped.

As someone whose children refer to him as “Grandpa,” I felt this in my brittle bones that could probably use more calcium. That being said, imagine being the guy who got back together with Jennifer Lopez and married her, only to instantly check out barely a year later. The whole world saw that happen, so God only knows what it was like for Ben Affleck’s kids who had front row seats for that ride and Ana de Armas. So, good on them for not taking relationship advice from a messy bench who lives for the drama.
