As a kid, I loved when James Brown would look like he was ending a show or song and was so exhausted that someone would come put his cape on him to lead him off stage, only for him to toss the cape aside and continue performing. You think that he’s done, but he just has to get back in there and keep doing his thing. It’s also something I quickly learned would get a laugh if an adult saw a kid do it. This morning, I was reminded of that bit thanks to Ed Harris.
I have not ventured into Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, nor do I have any real desire to. But I’m in the minority there, because those shows are pretty popular. Taylor Sheridan can cast himself as someone who dates models and tell critics that he’s trolling them for a reason. And that reason is that he seems like he’s pretty high on his own success, but that success is there. Regardless, that hasn’t prevented any high-profile fallouts, like with original Yellowstone star Kevin Costner.
Now, Ed Harris can count himself among the folks who have felt fed up with Sheridan’s shows. Harris appears on Dutton Ranch, and on a red carpet last night, he made it clear that he did not enjoy the experience, as he notes that, during filming, he almost said, “get me the f*** outta here.” “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters,” Harris explained to Variety. “And that wasn’t really the case.”
Harris said that once he saw the show, he thought it was good and that his character was important, but he clearly was soured by the experience. Additionally, he says he sang a song for the show, and it ended up getting cut, leaving him to think, “F*** you people.” It’s during this moment that the interviewer, Marc Malkin, seems to almost move on, and Harris brings him back in. Then, Harris seems like he’s done, and Malkin brings him back. It’s a pretty fantastic exchange.
Despite feeling “misled” by the people behind the show, Harris will be back for season 2, which he says shoots this February. He also claims that he was told he would have more to do this go-round. I’m not watching the show, so I have no real skin in the game. I want Ed Harris to be happy. But if having such a crummy experience leads to more candid red carpet moments like this, then hopefully Ed can stick it out for a few more seasons.
