It is February, 2024. I write an article about Dan Harmon taking the blame for Donald Glover telling outlets that the script for the Community movie is done. The article does good numbers, and Dustin tells me that I did a great job with the headline, which makes me feel good. Here we are, over two years later, and Donald Glover is once again in the news for claiming that the movie based on the TV show is finally happening, and I am once again chasing the purple dragon that is Dustin’s approval.
While promoting the new Mario Bros. movie, Glover was, of course, asked about Community. Instead of just kicking that can down the road until they start production, he decided to fan the flames, while admitting that said fanning has been happening so much already. “We’re working on it right now,” he explained to Entertainment Tonight (via Deadline). “I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon.” You “think,” Donald?!
My wife and I know damn well that a runny nose or fever popping up in one of our kids can upend an entire day’s plans. Even if we may enjoy a break from whatever we have scheduled, we know that if our kids are excited about something that doesn’t happen, they will be massively bummed out. We don’t want that to happen! So, we try to avoid telling them about any plans so as not to get their hopes or expectations up, and I would like the Community folks to take note, thank you!
Now, to be fair, my plans with my kids don’t hinge on headlines or getting other people excited about what we might be doing. Even if a Community movie were packed with talented and popular stars from a show that has developed a significant following, there would still be some executive who insists on seeing how the show is trending and what have you. They need to please the algorithm, and mentioning the movie in interviews will keep it in the mighty zeitgeist.
But, please, for the love of Zod, can the next Community update be more conclusive? “‘Hey, everybody, we start shooting next Monday,’ said Danny Pudi,” is a sentence that I would much rather be writing. Imagine if Yvette Nicole Brown just shares a selfie from set without anyone even knowing that they’ve started! Just something else, please. Until the Dean is clad in a fanciful outfit, everything else is just noise.
