“Six Seasons and a movie” was a common refrain on the cult favorite show Community. Given the meta nature of the program (and the joke itself), fans assumed this was the show’s intention. There were ups and downs during the show’s tenure, but it hit its sixth season on the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen. The sixth season premiered almost ten years ago, and for a while, there was no movie in sight, and the prospect began to seem unlikely.

A lot of the actors had moved on to other projects. Dan Harmon, the show’s creator, struck gold with the success of Rick & Morty. As the years passed, the film seemed less and less likely to happen. Then updates started rolling in. There were rumblings and rumors. Then, in September 2022, Peacock greenlit a Community film. It was happening! Kind of. Since then, we’ve still been waiting for updates, and Donald Glover offered a doozy of one.

Last month, Donald Glover told Entertainment Weekly that he was told the script was done. It was great news! Both because it brought the movie closer to reality and continued to confirm that Glover would return for the feature-length film. It was a dose of good news for the fanbase, and now creator Dan Harmon is here to pump the brakes (and take the blame).

While speaking to Variety, Harmon confirmed that he told Glover the script was finished. Whether that was correct or not is a different story. “I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always ‘almost done,’” Harmon told the outlet. “What can I tell you about it — it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done.”

So, the film is not as close as fans may have thought. Still, this is not a bad update! A lot is riding on this movie, and it feels like Harmon doesn’t want to screw it up. The creator said, “I’ve been having kind of a nervous breakdown the last couple of months just by working on it, and that’s a good thing because I’m having all kinds of flashbacks to 2009. It’s gonna be awesome.” A Community movie is on the horizon, and if Harmon is this excited, it should be a good one.
