When The Office star Craig Robinson announced on social media last week that he was quitting comedy, a small part of me hoped he meant it. Not because I dislike Robinson, but because, honestly, that would’ve been a bold move. (Note that the Insta post is right next to another Insta post advertising his upcoming comedy gigs:
But the story spread quickly, and it soon became obvious that this was just another eye-rolling publicity stunt. That realization made me like Craig Robinson a little less. His follow-up Instagram post asked for advice on starting a small business, and now there are billboards plastered across Los Angeles announcing his decision to quit comedy.
That’s not how you quit comedy. That’s how comedy quits you. Has no one learned anything from years of “big announcements” and fake reunion teases before the Super Bowl? The inevitable letdown always irritates the hell out of people.
According to Variety, the whole thing appears to be part of an AT&T marketing campaign. The billboards are in AT&T’s signature blue. And that makes it even worse. It’s one thing to promote nonsense for a laugh; it’s another to do it for a telecom. I hope they paid him well. Maybe enough for him to actually retire from comedy, because whatever this is? It ain’t comedy.
This is what happens when Peacock cancels your surprisingly solid snake-hunting show.
