I loved James Gunn’s Superman. I ended up seeing it three times in theaters, though, admittedly, by the third time, I would have rather seen Weapons, but had already promised to go to Superman with a friend. Such is life. The movie hit everything I would have wanted from a Superman movie, and brought a few surprises as well. The biggest? Jimmy Olsen was my favorite character in the movie.
Skyler Gisondo was a perfect choice for the Daily Planet’s intrepid protographer, but I knew that going in. What I didn’t expect was the movie to present him as some kind of moderately reluctant lothario. The characterization seemed pulled from a recent run on the character by Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber. Olsen was one of the funniest parts of the film, and now, we’re getting more.
DC Crime, a new show set in Gunn’s DC Universe, was announced yesterday. It’s a true-crime docuseries that is hosted by Olsen, with the first season set to focus on Gorilla Grodd, a talking gorilla with telepathic abilities. The show is set to be written and showrun by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, who created the hilarious Netflix docuseries American Vandal.
The Olsen of it all is more than enough reason to get excited. This project feels perfect for the character and gets us more Gisondo. However, something that wasn’t hinted at directly in the announcement is that this show could, potentially, give us our first look at James Gunn’s take on The Flash. Grodd is one of the speedrunner’s fastest enemies, and given that a pair of famous Green Lanterns are debuting on a TV show, the same could happen for The Flash.
There’s absolutely a world where the Flash is obscured for most of the show. He is pretty fast, after all, and could be represented in footage or pictures as a red blur. However, the Flash can be a pretty funny character as well. It would almost feel like a missed opportunity for him not to appear at least in one talking head, maybe toward the end of the season. It’s still early. That could happen. But it will come with a significant announcement.
The casting of the Flash will likely be a big deal with a big star. There’s absolutely a world where Gunn plucks an “unknown” for the role, but he can’t do that for everyone, and David Corenswet already kind of filled that spot. My bet is that the Scarlet Speedster has a pretty big name attached and finally sits still for a big interview in the last episode, but I’m just guessing because I’m excited. I’ll be along for the ride regardless.
