If Keanu Reeves asked me for anything, especially a sequel to Constantine, I would write him the fattest check he’s ever seen. Sure, it would immediately bounce, but it’s Keanu! James Gunn, on the other hand, is made of stronger stuff.
In his latest podcast appearance, Gunn confirmed to BobaTalks (via Deadline) that he has been in “on and off” discussions with Keanu about a sequel to the now 20-year-old movie. While that sounds promising, Gunn stayed very on brand with one key statement. “But I have not read any script yet.”
If you’ve been following the birth of Gunn’s DCU with any sort of regularity, then you know that he is dead set on avoiding the biggest problem plaguing Marvel movies: They go into production with unfinished scripts. Gunn is so adamant on avoiding that mistake that he had no problem pumping the brakes on The Brave and the Bold, which is set to fully unleash his DCU’s version of Batman. Particularly with a “For Sale” sign out front, Warner Bros. would love nothing more than to have a Batman movie directly on the heels of Superman’s success, but Gunn has held strong. Not even Keanu Reeves can charm his way into a green light.
As for Constantine 2, if it feels like you’ve been hearing about a potential sequel for almost a decade, that’s because you have. Reeves started banging the drum all the way back in 2019, and things really took off in 2022 when Warner Bros. confirmed the sequel was in development. However, that was announced before the earth-shattering decision to hand Gunn control of DC Studios following the whole Black Adam and Henry Cavill debacle.
While Gunn’s ascension put a question mark around Constantine 2’s chances, Reeves told Inverse back in February 2025 that he and director Francis Lawrence got the go-ahead from DC Studios to write a script.
Based on Gunn’s comments above, we have confirmation that this is the case. But if the DCU head is willing to backburner Batman until the script is just right, John Constantine can’t con his way out of this one. He’s gotta bring the goods.
