Aww, Bill Maher Hurt Dave Chappelle's Feelings

With the surprise drop of his latest comedy special, The Unstoppable, Netflix is clearly still handing Dave Chappelle dump trucks full of money. It was presumably an embarrassment of riches that he tossed on top of the other pile of cash that he received for performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival. But before you go thinking that Dave is living that sweet life, did you know that some people aren’t praising him for doing comedy in Saudi Arabia? It’s a downright travesty. Who knew one man could face such trials?

Because writing about butthurt egomaniacs is apparently my genre this yuletide season, Dave reportedly went off on one particular and surprising critic: Bill Maher. Setting aside Chappelle’s problematic views for a moment, he’s operating at an entirely different level than Maher. For starters, people actually want to see Dave Chappelle do standup. He’ll be remembered as one of the greats, whether that’s warranted or not. But like Bill Burr, Chappelle can’t handle any criticism over taking a bucket of Saudi cash.

Here’s the thing, though: Maher didn’t even go that far. In fact, he actually praised comedians for attending the Riyadh Festival. All he did was push back on Chappelle’s notion that it’s “easier to talk” in Saudi Arabia than it is in America. Maher is no stranger to complaining about “wokeness,” or whatever, and even he rolled his eyes at that one. Well, that downright hurt Dave’s feelings.

Via Variety:

“Recently in the news, I’ve been getting a lot of grief, again, because I did a comedy festival in Saudi Arabia,” Chappelle said to applause. “And you hear those cheers? That’s Black people. America’s whites, they’re furious. Boy, I gotta tell you something. I’ve never not felt guilty about something. I don’t feel guilty at all. And Bill Maher, the famous comedian, I’ve known Bill since I was like, 18, 19 years old, and I’ve never said this publicly, but f*** that guy. I’m so f***ing tired of his little smug, cracker-a** commentary.”

In Dave Chappelle’s extremely limited defense, Bill Maher does have an inexplicably popular HBO show and routinely makes headlines for his opinions. He’s not nobody, and because we’re in The Bad Place, his words do carry some weight. That being said, again, Dave Chappelle is the biggest comedian in the world while Bill recently revealed that he quit doing standup because he’s afraid of the “political atmosphere.”

At the end of the day, Maher’s criticism should have bounced right off Chappelle. We’re talking about a guy who had the nerve to criticize Louis CK’s alleged victims for being soft. And yet, here’s Chappelle crying during his million-dollar Netflix special because of Bill Maher, a dude who looks like the water blob senator from the first X-Men movie. That’s who has you shook? Maybe watch who you’re calling soft, Dave.
