It would have been safe to assume that we wouldn’t see a proper trailer for Avengers: Doomsday until Comic-Con got into full swing this weekend. That has certainly been the way of the past. But in a move that almost feels intended to prevent an inevitable leak, Marvel has dropped a trailer for its biggest film in years, days before the convention begins. However, the move might have happened because it doesn’t really show us anything we haven’t already seen.
Yes, we get to see the X-Men of a former franchise square off against modern-day Avengers, but that seemed pretty much guaranteed at this point. We see the Fantastic Four join the New Avengers, James Marsden in blue and yellow, and Rebecca Romijn change into Florence Pugh. Hell, we even get Chris Evans calling Thor’s hammer… again. And to be clear, a lot of this is shown in really weird, tight closeups that feel intended to shield further details or hide some pretty underwhelming shots.
We also get our first look at RDJ’s Dr. Doom, and he looks just about how you would expect, or how plenty of YouTubers have surmised since he was announced to be playing the legendary villain. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I want Dr. Doom to be Dr. Doom, but having the reveal be what we all expect doesn’t make it very exciting, even though RDJ’s casting could be the most exciting part of the movie, given his connection to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. We see him block Thor’s hammer, sure, but the real juice will be in the Avengers’ relationship to the actor underneath.
If I had to guess, we’ll probably see RDJ without the mask for the first time since Endgame in a stinger on the new Spider-Man movie. But I also think that’s just me being very hopeful. There is so much to mine from that relationship, especially with Peter being unknown in the MCU, that I hope they’re obscuring it because it will be so integral to what’s going on. It has to be!
Aside from that, this was pretty underwhelming. They don’t even really get into what Doom’s plan is yet. If it is as ripped from the comics as people think, it will probably sound a lot more confusing than Thanos’ idea of killing half the universe, but Doom still needs to lead this thing, and it feels like he’s been taking a back seat. They’re hiding what could be their biggest ace, and I just hope they aren’t doing so because they’re trying to attach it to a pair of 2s.
