I recently went and saw Avatar: Fire & Ash and had a pretty fantastic time. The movie was an engrossing thrill ride, and I made it the whole time without having to get up to pee! The whole thing! Yes, I felt like I had to pee for a good amount of it, but not to the point where I was like, “Sorry, Payakan, this is too much water for me to handle.” To be fair, part of the reason I had such a successful bladder excursion is that I made at least two trips to the bathroom once I arrived in the theater. One was during previews, and I actually did miss something: The Odyssey.

Your boy was pretty hyped to see a prologue-like preview for Nolan’s newest epic. One of my most cherished NYC memories involved seeing the first six minutes of The Dark Knight twice at the Lincoln Center AMC, months before the film released. It was one of those rare times I was able to sign up for something online that was free but didn’t sell out in twenty minutes. But I didn’t have to worry about my bladder in 2007, both because I was younger and because there wasn’t a three-hour movie that followed the Joker’s bank heist. This time, I was not so lucky.

I assumed that they’d play the prologue for The Odyssey last because it was longer. Cause I’m an idiot. Disney has put all its might behind a series of Avengers: Doomsday trailers and, since it owns the Avatar franchise, it put one of those trailers dead last. So, I got to see Thor kneel in a forest and ask Odin for strength, but I missed the first, like, 30 seconds to a minute of the Odyssey prologue, and you know what? It was still incredible.

**Slight spoilers for Nolan’s adaptation of a story that’s existed since the 8th century B.C.**

Nolan’s take on the classic story seems nothing short of exciting. Seeing Odysseus and his soldiers huddled away inside the famed Trojan Horse was exhilarating. There’s an insane amount of tension as they execute their attack on the unwitting soldiers and attempt to open a giant gate to allow reinforcements to join in. Then, after all is said and done, we get an incredible sizzle reel of other shots in the film, including our first good look at the Cyclops. But don’t take my word for it, just ask Mia Goth.

The Pearl star will play Melantho in the film, who is a maid of Odysseus and Penelope. She was recently interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter and gushed about her time on the film. “That was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It really was. It was profound,” Goth told the outlet. “I’ve been such a fan of his work for years. And so to have that opportunity and to witness him and how he directs was incredible. I took a lot from that. The trust that he has in actors was enlightening.”

My mind was made up when I saw the footage. There was no way I wasn’t going to see this movie, but Goth’s gushing did get me extra pumped up. Sure, she could be putting on a show for promotion, but it sounds pretty genuine. Additionally, if an actor in a cast this big and star-studded is talking about how Nolan is putting his trust in them, then I think we’re going to have another classic on our hands.
