My feelings on the MCU tend to change with every passing day. Some days, I’m over it. There’s no desire to see it continue, and I’ve missed many of the tie-in shows and several movies at this point. I’m no longer a completionist like I was as recently as 2021. Other days, I’m beyond hyped for the idea of Robert Downey Jr. returning to play universe-wrecking Doctor Doom. I contain multitudes! What remains unchanged is my opinion of Kevin Feige, which is that he is a very smart man.
He has made missteps, of course. It would be impossible to run such a massive media entity for over a decade without stumbling a few times. Regardless, he knows what he’s doing, so I found it very funny to see people claim that the current deluge of Avengers: Doomsday trailers that have leaked online is a mistake on Feige’s part. Part of me still thinks that Disney placed these teasers exclusively in front of Avatar: Fire & Ash because they wanted as many eyes on them as possible, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t want to hedge their bets.
The third Avatar film is still doing very well, and, depending on which teaser you see, they drop it on you right before the movie starts. You’re going to see it if you see Avatar 3, and a lot of people are. That hasn’t stopped the trailers from not just leaking online but getting picked up by numerous outlets, including us. While most places have waited to share the actual footage until an official release, they’ve still shared descriptions and breakdowns. People know what’s coming and that feels like part of the plan.
I tend to avoid trailer leaks, but, because I knew there would be four of these trailers, I’ve watched each grainy cellphone version that has been made available. They’re exciting! And each time, they were still up. Now, I’m no big city lawyer or nothin’, but I reckon if Disney were concerned about these leaks that it would put all its considerable might behind scrubbing them from the internet. Instead, they’ve been allowed to spread before an official release, drumming up more excitement.
At this point, Kevin Feige should just admit that he is doing it himself. I don’t imagine he’s crouched in a screening room and taking an intentionally poor video on his iPhone, but I’d bet dollars to donuts that he insisted the trailers find their way online. Part of me also thinks that if he copped to it, he’d be hailed as more of a marketing eficioando than people already give him credit for.
The newest leak features a team-up that I wasn’t expecting but was thrilled to see, even in a lousy Reddit video. If I didn’t have two kids and three jobs, I would go see Avatar 3 again just to witness the teaser on a big screen (and because I love the mighty Tulkun). The leak stuff is working, so get your flowers, Kevin. We all know it’s you anyway.
