Korrasami Lives: Lesbian Relationship Will Be Explored In Comic Books

Korra and Asami are coming back in the form of newly announced graphic novels from Dark Horse Comics. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, The Legend of Korra’s co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino revealed key art from the first volume, as well as the image above, which suggests Korrasmi’s blossoming romance might be less chaste than it was in that series finale.

Let’s be clear: we’re not hoping for Rule 34 explicit. But something like this fantastic fan art would certainly thrill us:

The Legend of Korra has been praised for its representation of women, people of color, and lesbians. After the show wrapped, the creators confessed via blogs that they worried what the reaction might be if they pushed the romance visuals much further than the intimate look of love. But here’s hoping with Dark Horse at their back, they’ll have the freedom to show the kinds of expressions of love (like kissing) that straight characters are commonly depicted doing.

Just as the Avatar: The Last Air Bender run did, these comics will pick up where the series left off. IGN reports that DiMartino promised, “We’re definitely going to focus on Korra and Asami’s relationship.” He also spoke about how aware they are about what this delicately crafted love meant to viewers. “It’s been so great to see how much it connected with everyone,” DiMartino said. “We knew people would hopefully enjoy it, but you never know… It’s touched people on an emotional level that I didn’t expect.”

There’s no word yet on when the three volumes will hit shelves. But fans will also have Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Poster Collection and The Legend of Korra: Art of Book Four —released on August 4th and September 15th respectively—to look forward to.
