We’re a week into the winter TCA— that time of year when every network is releasing news and revealing ratings-boosting secrets for their upcoming shows. Or, in at least one specific case, refusing to reveal secrets but rubbing their own knowledge in our faces. Spoilers for The Force Awakens ahead.
After a panel for Showtime’s Roadies, J.J. Abrams stuck around to talk to reporters about The Force Awakens. Because new Cameron Crowe is exciting, sure, but we want to know about Rey, dammit! Abrams, though, is keeping his mouth frustratingly shut. When asked if he knows who Rey’s parents are, he basically responded with a “Yes, duh.” But that doesn’t mean he’s sharing.
I know quite a bit, but obviously it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian [Johnson]’s story to continue now. The last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy he showed me.
This is basically nothing, but maybe at most is confirmation for what we already know, or at least assume, right? That the story will continue Rey’s exploration of her lineage, which possibly involves Luke Skywalker but also maybe not. I suppose if we’re desperate we could consider this a fun tidbit of new information, but really it would be pretty weird if the next installments DIDN’T continue down that path. So fine, consider those straws grasped and thanks for nothing*, Abrams.
One thing Abrams would like us to know is that it would be totally cool if we kept our complaints in certain areas to ourselves. When asked how it felt to be the man who killed Harrison Ford, he simply responded, “First of all, I didn’t kill Harrison Ford, just for the record.” He did follow that up by saying “We knew we needed to do something that was bold and maybe unexpected.”
Mission accomplished, Abrams.
*Nothing except for that really cool movie you gave us, I suppose. Thanks for that. I guess.
