New Girl is on its last legs. I know a lot of you gave up on the show way back when Nick and Jess broke up, and while I firmly and sometimes loudly argued that there was enough to stick around for after that, I don’t know if anyone believes that now. Jess and Nick have become meandering impressions of themselves, Coach is leaving the show entirely, and does anyone actually still care about Schmidt and Cece? Is there anything left to care about in this show?
Yes. There is Winston.
Winston, with whom the writers have never really known what to do, is still doing his Winston thing. While everyone else is busy maneuvering their super contrived plot lines, Winston has priorities.
And apparently he still has cat drama, even though we haven’t actually seen Furguson in a couple seasons.
In fact all season, Winston has been playing around with his most substantive story arc yet, as he starts his new career as a cop. But in between the scenes that have anything to do with that, he’s still been there, setting the mood.
He actually pays attention to every other character— you know, like an actual human friend would. (Okay, yes, sometimes he pays TOO MUCH attention.)
While the rest of the characters have devolved into self-absorbed adult babies, Winston, who has always been relegated to the show’s periphery, has managed to stay true to his weird-ass self, and is now pretty much the only reason to keep watching.
