Holy shit, that Game of Thrones trailer HBO released yesterday is dark (and full of terrors). I mean, literally dark. Without a closer look and shining a light, you’d have missed quite a bit. So, just for you, I cruised through the frames at a slower rate, and with the help of a photo editor, brightened what our naked eyes couldn’t see (there are a few crazy fast, gif-worthy moments, too). Let’s check out what was going on under cover of darkness, or speeding by too quickly to catch.
I also asked Genevieve Burgess (who has an uncannily encyclopedic memory of the books) to check behind me and add any notes she might have. Thanks Genny!
***Spoiler Warning! Book Spoilers are referenced herein. If you can’t stand the thought of such a thing, back on out now. Book Spoilers***
Here lies Jon Snow. For exactly how long,
Davos contemplating…likely the remains of Shireen’s pyre (*sob*).
Another burned body,
An army approaches; someone is advancing on the Boltons.
Melisandre (crying?) with Davos, probably mumbling about Jon being the chosen one.
Daario and Ser Jorah looking for Daenerys.
Jorah finds the ring Dany dropped.
Daenerys being “escorted” somewhere by the Dothraki (Dany is being escorted back to Vaes Dothrak, as she was supposed to be after Khal Drogo’s death to live out her days with the Dosh Khaleen, the widowed Khaleesis who live there. —Genevieve Burgess)
She looks up and sees either Jorah (if the shot immediately following is related), or Drogon (who is briefly seen later in the trailer).
High Sparrow.
The Greyjoys massing. (You can see a bit of the tip of the Kraken on the banners. And I’ve been to that location, it’s by the Carrick-a-Rede bridge in Northern Ireland. — Genevieve Burgess)
Indeed, I caught a better screencap and there’s the Greyjoy sigil.
Drogon.
Lancel Lannister (who was speaking to Cersei and the Mountain, when she says, “I choose violence”).
I think this could be the Tower of Joy flashback scene, among them young Ned Stark and Howland Reed. Here, they’ll encounter Ser Arthur Dayne.
Looks like Alliser Thorne behind the bearded guy. Confrontation at the Wall? — Genevieve Burgess
The waif is…
beating the crap out of…
Arya.
Margaery
Someone on horseback swings a fiery mace at
the approaching figure.
I’m unable to make out the banner markings here. (The only red banner I can think of off the top of my head is Stannis’s former banner. But the battle is probably against Bolton, given the earlier image of a flayed man being burned on the battlefield. Someone is rallying the remains of Stannis’ troops? — Genevieve Burgess)
Theon is recaptured, presumably by Ramsay’s men,
and someone pushes his face under water. *Edited to add, as pointed out by John W., this may be Euron Greyjoy being born again from the sea.
Cersei and Jaime seem to have made up.
Brienne attacks someone;
presumably killing him. (This also looks like Stannis’s troops helmet to me. — Genevieve Burgess)
It looks like Dany may have had her ring returned.
The Hall of Faces.
Melisandre is disrobing yet again, and I hope she’s not making a shadow baby with Jon’s corpse, but I wouldn’t put it past her.
It does look like a woman’s hands touching Jon.
Is this Arya?
Why?
Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) (Given the setting of a rainy bridge, this looks like the show is going to confirm the suspicion from the books that Euron killed Balon. Of course, Euron paid a Faceless Man to do it for him, and many suspect that’s where J’aqen Hgar ended up, but obviously the show had other uses for him. — Genevieve Burgess)
Tormund Giantsbane (Directly behind Tormund is a shield bearing the Bolton sigil. Why on earth would Tormund be fighting the Boltons and who would be leading him to do so? HINT HINT. — Genevieve Burgess A corpse? A reanimated corpse might want to rally some troops. — Cindy)
High Sparrow with Margaery
Not sure who this is. (Looks like Sparrows in Kings Landing, maybe. — Genevieve Burgess)
Arya blind.
Sansa on the run.
A gloved hand reaches for…
Longclaw.
Turns out that gloved hand belongs to…
Davos, who’s with Jon’s corpse,
as is…Ghost. Because of the wolf’s dirtied up bottom half, I wondered for a moment if Bran had warged into Summer and somehow gotten to Jon, just to be with him when he *died.*
Kudos to the editor, who managed to bring in allusions to just about every Jon Snow lives theory (Melisandre, Longclaw, Ghost). Now, all we have to do is endure the long wait until April 24th.
