Beetlejuice graced the afterlife with his presence in 1988. The film solidified Tim Burton as a weird, original filmmaker. The film was strange, funny, and gross, and gave us a Michael Keaton career performance. Winona Ryder influenced a generation of socially awkward teenagers, giving them someone to look to and say, “That’s me!” It cleaned up at the box office, spawned a cartoon series, and almost went to Hawaii for a sequel, but that never happened.

For years, it seemed like a sequel to the classic flick would never enter the land of the living. That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Burton had moved on to more CG-laden affairs. The stars of Ryder and Keaton began to dim. Moody teens had The Nightmare Before Christmas to project their feelings onto. Things changed. Then Alfred Gough and Miles Miller dragged Tim Burton back to the ghostly waiting room.

Gough and Miller are no strangers to introducing classic characters to a new generation. The duo is responsible for the Superman-less Smallville, showing Clark Kent as a teen trying to understand his lot in life. Recently, Gough and Miller created Wednesday, an Addams Family show that focused on Wednesday Addams as, you guessed it, a teenager trying to understand her lot in life. There, they worked with Burton on the Jenna Ortega-starring show and now the gang is back together for the return of Beetlejuice.

The film, aptly titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice finds the Deetz family (Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jenna Ortega) returning to their creepy Connecticut home. Soon, Ortega unleashes the ghost with most, Beetlejuice. The trailer shows plenty in the way of callbacks. Familiar characters and monsters are on full display, albeit a bit more animated than in the 1988 film.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is due to hit theaters in September. Burton resisted doing the film for years, but hopefully, it will be a shot in the arm for the once-exciting director. The episodes of Wednesday he directed were spectacular, so hopefully Gough and Miller will help get his creative juices flowing once again.
