This was a very dry week for new movies. Initially, we had movies like Poor Things and Challengers set to premiere around this time, but the AMPTP’s stupidity and arrogance led to some delays rather than them, you know, paying the people who do all the work for them. So, instead, we have The Nun II on top for the third week in a row. Its $8.4 million gross brings its total domestic intake to $69.2 million. Nice. To put that into perspective, DC’s Blue Beetle (which really deserved better) has a $69.8 million gross after six weeks.
That’s not a brilliant weekend gross, but it was still enough to beat Expend4bles, which debuted at number two with only $8.3 million. There was no love for this sequel, both critically and commercially, nor any genuine enthusiasm for this kind of movie. It seemed like it was getting dumped into this slot, which initially had far harsher competition. We have Tubi at home, Stallone; we can watch stuff like this whenever we want.
The horror It Lives Inside landed at number seven with $2.63 million from 2,005 theatres. It was one spot ahead of Dumb Money, which expanded its theatre numbers to over 600 and saw a 1,031% increase in its earnings.
The legendary Talking Heads concert documentary Stop Making Sense got an IMAX re-release. It inspired a lot of enthusiasm when the band got back together to promote it (and managed to not kill one another in the process. That’s growth!) From 264 locations, it brought in $800,637.
Christian inspirational sports film I Can made $148,000 from 135 theatres; French thriller The Origin of Evil earned $45,950 from 206 cinemas; romance My Sailor, My Love brought in $27,419 from 35 theatres; the documentary Uncharitable made $11,826 from one location.
This coming week will see the release of horror sequel
