In the opening moments of the trailer for Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino, I was intrigued, thinking that Zendaya would be starring in a traditional romantic comedy. Nevermind! My expectations took a surprising turn when Zendaya engaged in a threesome with two best friends. So, not a traditional romcom after all! The affair seems to have long-lasting consequences, especially after Zendaya’s character, a dominant tennis player, is forced out of competition because of a career-ending injury.
Now, Tashi Duncan finds herself married to one of the best friends, a tennis champion currently experiencing a losing streak. She must now guide her husband toward redemption, but in order to do so, he must confront his former best friend (and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend) — now a washed-up tennis player.
Love Triangle + Tennis = Challengers. I’m sold.
Challengers opens in theaters on September 15, 2023.
