We’ve often talked about how family-friendly flicks are almost always going to win in the box office battle against adult-oriented ones. The audience is just bigger and, even in the dry months, there will always be a need for parents to put those damn kids in a quiet room for a few hours to get some peace. While “Wuthering Heights” was the big winner in its opening week, its competition took the top spot in week two.
GOAT, the animated comedy with basketball-playing animals, leaped over Heathcliff’s horn to take in $17 million. Its domestic gross is now at over $58.3 million, which is nothing to sneeze at. Meanwhile, on the windy moors, Emerald Fennell’s movie is also doing pretty well. It did see a 56.7% drop from its opening, but it’s also sitting comfortably at $60 million in North America. Internationally, it’s doing absolute gangbusters, with a $91.7 million intake. That’s over $151.7 million worldwide, for an R-rated sexy drama. Can we get more horny movies in theatres now?
The highest-grossing new release of the weekend was I Can Only Imagine 2, the Christian musical drama, which landed at number three with $8 million. That was more than enough to beat Glen Powell. His latest movie, the A24 black comedy How to Make a Killing, landed limply at number six with $3.56 million. To put that into perspective, at number seven is EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, Baz Luhrmann’s concert documentary featuring the King. That one brought in $3.25 million from 325 locations, compared to the 1,625 theatres How to Make a Killing played in.
The horror movie Psycho Killer only scared up $1.6 million, leaving it just outside the top 10 at number 11. The nominees for the Best Animated Short Oscar got a packaged cinema release and grossed just over $1 million from 354 locations. In time for Chinese New Year, the martial arts drama Blades of the Guardians earned $760,000.
The romantic drama Midwinter Break made $530,000 from 808 places. The indie zombie movie This Is Not a Test bit off a gross of $150,000.
This coming week sees the release of horror sequel Scream 7, comedy-adventure The Napa Boys, and musical drama K-Pops!
