I dig a good time loop movie, especially when there’s a new wrinkle on an old trope. Palm Springs, for instance, introduced the joint time loop, Happy Death Day introduced it to the horror genre, and I’m currently reading a novel — Gillian McAllister’s Wrong Place, Wrong Time — where the protagonist actually wakes up each morning in the previous day, forced to live her days backward until she can solve a mystery.

Peacock’s Meet Cute — starring Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson — is less a wrinkle on the Groundhog Day loop and more of a commentary on the power differential in that situation. It went unsaid in Groundhog Day — although if you’ve recently rewatched it, yikes to that hotel scene — and more recently About Time, a movie that I loved that Emily rightfully also suggested was “creepy as hell.” Meet Cute gets into what is creepy about someone reliving the same day over and over in order to win over a love interest, and the message is a resounding, Not cool!

Meet Cute will stream September 21st on Peacock.
