The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were revealed this morning, with Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed in charge of the announcement. There were a few surprises but, as is so often the case with the Oscars, a lot of things we already expected.

The big winner of the morning was Everything Everywhere All at Once, with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress (for both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Supporting Actor. The Banshees of Inisherin landed nine nominations, scattered throughout the major categories, while Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans got seven. Two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund landed his first Best Director nomination for Triangle of Sadness, which is also a Best Picture nominee. Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front ended up being the streaming service’s biggest player, which nobody would have expected a few months ago, and landed seven nominations.

Andrea Riseborough’s much-derided grassroots campaign paid off and she landed her first nomination for Best Actress with To Leslie. We also saw unexpected nominations in Supporting Actor for Brian Tyree Henry and Judd Hirsch.

Alas, there are some disheartening omissions. No women in Best Director. No nominations at all for The Woman King or Till. Wendell and Wild didn’t make the cut for Animated Feature. Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave received zero nominations.

All in all, I would say this is a decent slew of nominations. There’s nothing majorly radical here, nor is there an obvious villain in the vein of Green Book or Crash to worry about. It still feels like the Academy has a ton of work to do to make things better, but things could have been way worse. Let’s wait for the actual ceremony before it all goes downhill!
