Hallelujah, the world is good today! The Hollywood Reporter just announced that Taika Waititi has signed a deal to write and direct the fourth Thor movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following on from the rapturous success of Thor: Ragnarok and the indelible impression Waititi has left on the franchise as a whole, Marvel has signed him on for a new installment. Rejoice!
This news comes the week of San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s fascinating to see the story come out now rather than be a big reveal in Hall H, where Marvel Studios are set to return after a few years away from the convention. Rest assured, Kevin Fiege and team probably still have a few surprises up their sleeve.
But as The Hollywood Reporter also notes, this isn’t great news for Waititi’s other major project, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Akira. Warner Bros. had penciled it in for a May 2021 release but script concerns have seen the shooting start date pushed back. Sources say Warner Bros. is keen to keep Waititi on board for the project in the long-term. They’ve waited a long damn time to make this movie happen!
Waititi’s next movie, Jojo Rabbit, where he plays a young German boy’s imaginary friend who is also Hitler, will be released on October 18.
So prepare your pineapple rompers and make way for the sexiest director working today!
