Sydney Sweeney’s Christy opened this weekend with one of the worst box office showings of all time. The film debuted with $1.3 million, or $648 per theater, making it one of the ten lowest openings ever for a movie released in 2,000 theaters or more.
It’s a rough result on top of an increasingly bad few months for Sydney Sweeney’s public image. There was the American Eagle ad fiasco, the poor performance of two other 2025 releases, Americana and Eden, her apparent cozy relationship with Jeff Bezos, and her new relationship with producer/villain Scooter Braun.
With The Housemaid coming out on December 19, Sweeney could ill afford another PR mess, so she tried yesterday to salvage the box office for Christy, posting on Instagram that she’s still “deeply proud of this movie. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”
It’s unclear what kind of impact it’s making, except a negative one on her reputation and, apparently, her relationships in the industry (Ruby Rose, who auditioned for the role in Christy, called her a “cretin”).
What is clear is that her PR team isn’t helping, at least based on a post from Brobible reporter Eric Italiano that went viral on Reddit yesterday.
got this PR email today, never got one like it before — her team's down BAD https://t.co/KuLKNa0BWg pic.twitter.com/IT1O07ITS4

Yikes.
For what it’s worth, I’m a little skeptical of the Popcornmeter, too (it’s at 97 percent now), if only because of the influx of overly effusive notes on the day of release, and the less generous audience reviews that have followed. I’m not saying anyone paid for those reviews, but I am saying that that is a practice that exists.
