Like Kingpin trying to revive his dead family, Hollywood has discovered the multiverse. Characters that were once written out of existence are given new life. Actors who have moved on to bigger and better things are dragged back in, like Pacino in Jack & Jill (I think). Even death won’t stop the reemergence of your favorite characters. To put it more succinctly, “These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, ‘Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!’” That’s what Michael Shannon said in a recent interview with Collider.
This weekend, Shannon returns as the Kryptonian villain, General Zod, in WBD’s The Flash. Despite his character facing an oft-debated death in 2013’s Man Of Steel, Shannon returns thanks to the multiverse. When he was told the multiverse would bring him back to life, Shannon said, “I don’t know what that means.” However, Shannon agreed to do the movie and went on to say, “I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor.”
To be fair, Shannon doesn’t disavow the film. It sounds like the experience just wasn’t for him. He describes Man Of Steel as an “in-depth character study situation” but admits that The Flash isn’t really Zod’s story. Man of Steel took a year of Shannon’s life, whereas The Flash was only a couple of weeks. To Shannon, the most important thing in these movies is “performance,” and it seems this film didn’t allow for the type of work he’s used to.
Despite Shannon not being satisfied with The Flash, Shannon had nothing but nice things to say about Ezra Miller! That’s … something. The Zod actor described Miller as a “fascinating performer and actor.” According to Shannon, Miller was facing a huge challenge in this film. Michael wasn’t referencing the numerous allegations against the We Need To Talk About Kevin actor, but, as he admitted, he only cares about performance.
