Margot Robbie is in demand. The success of Barbie cemented her as not only a bonafide movie star but a successful producer as well. The film made over a billion dollars at the box office and has found a home in the zeitgeist. It not only made money but it also became culturally relevant. Now, we know what Robbie’s next starring vehicle might be.
Avengelyne is a comic book by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld. It tells the story of an angel who was banished from heaven, stripped of all her powers (save her strength and magic blood), and set on a path to battle the forces of evil, including the devil himself. The character was created in 1995, and this isn’t the first attempt at an adaptation. Gina Carano was attached to the role in 2013 (but that version never saw the light of day).
A package deal for the property is currently being negotiated at Warner Brothers. It would bring Simon Kinberg as a producer, Olivia Wilde as the director, and Poor Things writer Tony McNamara to do the script. Robbie will star as the eponymous angel if the script is to her liking. Deadline reports that most deals are closed, bringing a price tag of seven figures to the film rights deal.
This is the second big movie adaptation that Warner Brothers has set their sights on. They also closed a big deal to make a Chris Farley biopic that would star Paul Walter Hauser and be directed by Josh Gad. The Avengelyne deal is reportedly bigger. The package has been a “hot property” since early April.
It will be interesting to see if a film like this takes off. Given that this is a lesser-known property, it could be a test of Robbie’s star power. Still, the team assembled for the adaptation is stacked. It could be a while before we see any updates, but it’s safe to say that if Robbie ends up starring in it, the film could be her next big hit.
