Kevin Conroy is synonymous with Batman. He began voicing the character in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992 and continued to do so in other shows, animated movies, and video games. when a new Batman actor is hired (a semi-regular event at this point), their performance will be compared to Conroy’s. Many (rightfully) consider him one of the greatest to don the cape and cowl (animated as they may be). All those people were dealt a stunning blow when Conroy passed in 2022.

At the time, DC Comics released Conroy’s personal comic story Finding Batman for free online. They no longer have it available, but even the only slightly internet-savvy folks out there should be able to track it down. At the time, people were also wondering what Conroy’s last performance as Batman would be. Their questions were answered when it was revealed that Conroy lent his voice to the video game Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. Upon the game’s release, people assumed that it was Conroy’s last go as the caped crusader. It was an end that many deemed unceremonious.

To be fair to the makers of Kill The Justice League, they likely didn’t know that the game would (potentially) be Conroy’s last turn in the role. Also, the name of the video game should have tipped people off to the fate of some of the characters. Still, there was internet outrage (gasp). People were boycotting the game, calling fictional characters disrespectful, and having full-on fits. The noise got so bad that someone (Warner Brothers probably) leaked some good news. Conroy would be reprising his infamous role one last time.

This year, a trilogy of animated films based on the DC Comics epic Crisis On Infinite Earths began releasing. The story deals with, you guessed it, a multiverse of Earths containing various versions of our favorite DC characters. While this new iteration occurs in a newly established cartoon universe, they will draw versions of the other characters from other animated universes. In Part 3, Conroy will return as his original animated version of Batman.

This news quelled the fears of a lot of fans. Now, a new casting announcement should have them jumping with joy. Not only did Conroy record lines for the third film, but Mark Hamill will join him as the Clown Prince of Crime. Like Conroy’s Batman, Hamill’s Joker is considered a touchstone version of the character (which has also spanned several shows, games, and movies). Having the pair reunite, even if they weren’t in the same room, should be welcome news to fans both ardent and casual.
