Avengers: Doomsday is still a few months away, and Peter Parker’s mega-success aside, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on shaky ground with audiences. The new movies and protagonists aren’t as popular as their Phase One counterparts. But never fear, because RDJ, Chris Evans, and company are back for the new movie. That script moved them… to a bigger house! In prep for Doomsday, Disney brought Avengers: Endgame back to cinemas, perhaps to gauge if audiences were still hyped. Spoilers: they are. Avengers Endgame: Encore — note the change in colon placement — took in a solid $26 million from over 3,000 theatres. That brings its total gross to $2,883,501,328, but it’s still about $40 million away from beating the highest-grossing film of all-time: Avatar. James Cameron, will you be announcing another re-release soon?
Resident Evil saw a 61% tumble in gross from its opening week, but it still held on strong and has now taken in over $103.4 million domestically. It was also good enough to beat three major new releases this past weekend.
At number three is Heart of the Beast, starring a very cute dog who deserves better than to be part of Brad Pitt’s PR spin. It barked up $20 million from 3,435 cinemas. Right behind that was Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, which took in over $19.1 million from 2,874 locations: a better per-theatre average than the doggo. It’s pretty surprising that this very odd biopic is a box office hit for A24, but it’s a good sign for the indie cinema darlings in their move to be more commercial. News wasn’t so positive for DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island, which could only scrape by with $12.8 million from 3,548 places.
The delightful Japanese comedy Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!, cha-cha-ed its way to $236,560 from 540 cinemas. The also-excellent Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, starring Mahershala Ali, had an impressive limited opening weekend: $199,000 from six locations. The Stunt Driver, starring Jay Baruchel as daredevil stuntman Ken Carter as he tries to launch a rocket car across the St. Lawrence River from Canada to America, earned $102,000.
In limited release news: Deep in the Heart 2: Texas Rivers, a wildlife documentary, brought in $60,340; The Incomer, a Scottish comedy about siblings on a remote island who go to war against an official who wants to move them to the mainland, grossed $18,200 from two cinemas; and The Scout, a drama about a location scout, earned $14,500 from one theatre.
This coming week sees the release of Colleen Hoover’s Rebecca rip-off Verity, starring Anne Hathaway annd Dakota Johnson, and Tom Cruise’s return to “serious” acting, Digger.
