Being a talk show guest can be hard (I assume). You have to be charming and witty. You are expected to talk about yourself and what you’re working on while ensuring that one is as interesting as the other. There is often a “pre-interview” where you chat with a producer, but those can bring their own challenges and expectations. One may find themselves taking it too seriously or not seriously enough. Yes, the people in these positions are usually doing fine, but it can still be challenging.
Sometimes, a person may find themselves on a show like Jimmy Kimmel: Live without an upcoming movie or show to promote. That was the case last week with Bob Odenkirk. The Better Call Saul star was Kimmel’s guest to promote a book that he wrote with his kids (awwwww). First, he said he had nothing coming up. When Kimmel pressed him, saying that they usually show a clip during that portion of the show, Odenkirk offered a trailer instead; A trailer about nothing.
Without getting into too much detail, the trailer is Odenkirk at his best. All the silliness that got him where he is is there. He’s also taking the material deathly seriously. You can feel him treating this short, jokey video as seriously as any other role he would grace us with. He also includes one of his kids (again, awwwww). It’s funny and sincere and was more exciting than if he promoted an actual movie.
Odenkirk is someone we are lucky to have, especially given his heart attack on the set of Better Call Saul. The whole interview with Kimmel is humble and kind. They take time to reflect on Richard Lewis who passed the same day and the attributes Odenkirk highlights about him speak to who he is (I believe). He remembers Lewis as “sweet” and that he “loved everybody and supported everybody.” I have the video time stamped for the trailer, but I recommend watching the whole thing.
