First of all, I can’t believe that it’s been eight years since Gilmore Girls left the air. Second, I can’t believe Scott Patterson — who played Luke on Gilmore Girls — is almost 57 years old, which means that he must have been 48 when the series ended, which further means that him being single all of those years on GG is even sadder than I previously believed.
And you might think, like I did, that if he was 48 when the show ended its run, that there must have been a huge age gap in between him and Lauren Graham, but you’d be wrong. There was only 8 years between them, which means that Lauren Graham is now 48, which is also insane.
So, if Lauren Graham is 48, then there must be a decent sized age gap between him and her much younger boyfriend, Peter Krause, right? Nope. Krause is 49.
In other words, if you want to feel old today, know that Scott Patterson is nearly 57 and that Peter Krause and Lauren Graham are pushing 50.
Where was I? Oh, yes: 56-year-old Scott Patterson. He’s actually been making the rounds the last couple of days teasing a potential Gilmore Girls reunion movie, and that’s great because it means we might actually, finally see a Luke and Lorelai wedding. I mean, it’s not out of the question. Graham, Alexis Bledel, Patterson and Amy Sherman-Palladino don’t have a ton on their plates right now: Palladino’s Bunheads was cancelled, Graham’s Parenthood ended its run, and Bledel’s last high-profile gig was a 2013 Gavin and Stacey remake with Jason Ritter that was picked up and then subsequently cancelled by Fox before it even aired. In other words, the principals are free, Gilmore Girls is still hugely popular thanks to Netflix, and we’re in an era that absolutely loves reunions, reboots, sequels, and remakes.
And what about Patterson? He’s definitely still around, but he’s mostly starring in movies and television shows outside of this site’s target demo, which is to say: He was a lead in NBC’s The Event, and he did have a string of Saw movies between 2007 and 2009.
More recently he was in Meth Head with Lukas Haas, and he has four movies in various stage of production. He also produced a movie from photographer Tyler Shields; spending $500,000 on one Shields’ photograph probably didn’t hurt him land the gig, either.
Here’s what surprised me, though I suspect that the hardest of hardcore Gilmore Girl fans already knew this, but Patterson was actually a baseball player before he turned to acting. In fact, he was a pitcher in the minor leagues between 1980 and 1986, where he once won 13 consecutive games a starter in the Atlanta Braves organization. And yes, he did have a baseball card:
Those were the years in which I was obsessed with baseball and, in particular, the Braves, and it’s only dawning on me now that the pitching prospect in the Braves organization of whom I was aware is now most famous for being Luke on Gilmore Girls.
Crazy.
So, in sum: You’re old, Gilmore Girls was awesome and may be coming back, and Scott Patterson has lived a lot more life than most of us might have expected.
