I’m not sure what MTV was thinking in inviting Johnny Depp onto the VMA Awards show given, well, everything. It felt like a real slap in the face to the millions of people whose story is not unlike Amber Heard and/or who feel that Heard deserves better.

Having seen the various clips now, I’m not sure whether MTV invited Depp on to promote him or embarrass him. Depp appears a few times, sort of, basically as a bridge between other moments or to commercials. It’s actually his face poorly beamed into the helmet of the MTV moonman floating above the stage. In these short segues, Depp’s video face says things like, “Hey, you know what? I needed the work,” and “I just want you to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need. Anything. You name it. Oh, and also, I’m a dentist.”

The joke is, basically, that Johnny Depp is desperate for work. Really desperate. Why would he be desperate for work? Well, he pissed away his career with a history of abuse allegations, a $20,000 wine habit, rambling incoherent interviews, and a string of terrible performances in mostly terrible films. MTV’s bit only served to remind us of that.

Here’s a compilation of the clips.

I don’t know if we should be more annoyed with MTV- a faded relic of its former self permanently trapped in a linear world- or bemused by how sad and pathetic Depp’s appearance was. I’m sure, however, that Depp’s delusional fans found something redeeming about the appearance. Sure, this is his big comeback, y’all.
