E! News has obtained an early recording of a new episode of the Smartless podcast, airing January 7th, in which Selena Gomez talks about what’s next for her career.
She said when she started with Wizards of Waverly Place, doing so much all at once was exciting.
“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun, but I was doing my TV show at the same time and I just found it really fun so I just kept going. But the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, ‘I would like to find something to just settle on.’”
She admitted that right now, at 31, she thinks she’d like to settle on acting.
“I do feel like I have one more album in me, but I would probably choose acting. I am gonna wanna chill because I’m tired.”
Listen, I get it. I’m around the same age as Gomez, and I’m tired too, and I didn’t even grow up acting and singing and dancing for money. So, if she does have one more album in her, I doubt she’ll be touring. The last time she did was for the 2016 “Revival” tour, which she canceled halfway through because of “mental health struggles” due to her lupus diagnosis. People close to her at the time described her as having a “psychotic break” as a result of the stress.
“At one point she’s like, ‘I don’t want to be alive right now. I don’t want to live,’” her former assistant said in My Mind and Me, the documentary Gomez made about her mental health. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after that and has sought treatment at mental health facilities multiple times since.
She’s, of course, made great strides since then, and I’m sure time and change have given her the wisdom of age. But sometimes her online behavior leads me to believe that she isn’t entirely stable. So, yeah. I think I’d stick with acting.
