Selena Gomez does not appreciate being memeified. First it was the blanket thing, which she seemed mostly fine with, but now that every facial expression she made at the 2023 VMAs has fallen victim to the curse of the internet, her patience is wearing thin.

She was nominated for three awards this year—Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, and Best Afrobeats—for the song “Calm Down,” a collaboration with Rema. The duo ultimately took home the Best Afrobeats award, but that wasn’t the only legacy Gomez left with. Eagle-eyed viewers couldn’t help but notice her reaction to Chris Brown’s name being mentioned.

Gomez responded to the sneer seen ‘round the world thusly:

Listen, I get it. A star like her can’t do anything without people falling over themselves to say something about it. Every time she posts something on Instagram, the Beliebers find a way to make it about Haley Bieber and their alleged feud. After years of that, it must be like, “Can I live, please?” But, girl, it’s all love! Hating Chris Brown is something we can all agree on!

Or maybe she was mad that people thought she was genuinely scared that something was going wrong during Olivia Rodrigo’s performance.

I mean…it looked like something was genuinely wrong!

I guess I don’t understand why she’s so bent out of shape about it. Who is “dragging” her for hating a hatable man and being concerned that a young singer was going to be electrocuted?

But we have to remember that Gomez has been pretty open about her complicated relationship with fame. Her 2022 documentary, My Mind and Me, offers an intimate glimpse into her struggles with her health, both mental and physical.
