One of the things we’ve lost with the relentless onward march of technology—apart from, you know, patience, dignity, and any reasonable expectation to what was once called ‘privacy’—is the cinematic magic of the phone call. Granted, mobile phones have lent themselves to some great scenes, but there’s something about a conversation on a phone that’s tethered to a particular location that lends itself to a much more interesting dynamic. I guess a comparison could be drawn with the contrast between letters and text messages—the former have a heft to them, a tactility, that the digital ephemera that superseded them simply can’t replicate. I get the same feeling with landlines and mobile phones. Twitter had this topic on its mind the other day when it asked people to ponder what they considered the greatest phone call scenes. My immediate thought was (of course) Heat, and Neil McCauley’s immortal ‘I’m talking to an empty telephone’, but there were some excellent responses that followed the prompt.

(Twitter still sometimes refuses to hide the parent Tweet when embedding, so excuse the duplication in some of these)
