On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer. They did not get into specifics, but the BBC reported it’s not prostate cancer and the King would begin “regular treatments” that same day.
As we all know, the King (damn, I still can’t get used to calling him that) has a complicated relationship with his youngest son, Prince Harry. So, in the wake of the cancer news, all eyes (in the media) turned to Harry and Meghan Markle.
On Tuesday, it was reported that 39-year-old Harry flew out to the UK to be with his father. Megan stayed home in Montecito with their two kids. That afternoon, Harry made a “quick visit” to see the King at Clarence House. This was allegedly the first time the two had been in each other’s presence since the King’s coronation ceremony last May.
A source told PEOPLE that their reunion was “good”, and “hopefully [Harry] will bring the grandchildren at some point too, as that would be lovely for all of them.” Less good? Harry’s relationship with his brother, Prince William. Insiders reported that the pair had no intention of seeing each other during Harry’s UK visit.
Harry flew home out of Heathrow Airport on a commercial Delta flight about 24 hours after seeing his father. He was back in Montecito several hours later. Obviously, outlets like the Daily Mail are emphasizing just how brief his “whirlwind” UK visit was. One (ridiculously long) headline reads: Prince Harry ‘switched flights’ to get back to Meghan quicker after original LA-bound jet was ‘delayed by two hours’ following his visit to cancer-stricken King Charles.
Another fun one? Inside Prince Harry’s £1,600-an-hour VIP lounge at Heathrow. Oh, it’s “Prince Harry’s” VIP lounge, eh? And I’m sure the other Royals wait at the gate like the rest of us plebs.
A royal expert recently told Entertainment Tonight that Charles “desperately wants to reconcile with Harry” and that he’s always left the door “open” for his son.
As for Prince William, he’s gotten back to royal duties while his father is in treatment. His wife, Princess Kate Middleton, continues to recover from her abdominal surgery back in January. She’s not expected to be fully healed for at least a few more months.
