Olivia Colman built her reputation as a character actress with a dizzying range of roles in comedies and dramas like Peep Show, Green Wing, Tyrannosaur, and Broadchurch. Then she blended outlandish comedy with deeply devastating drama for Yorgos Lanthimos’ critically celebrated and totally bonkers biopic The Favourite, and quite rightly won the Academy Award for her work.
Ahead of this big win, Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, knew Colman was a wonder, and so cast her in the TV adaptation of her one-woman show Fleabag. This ensemble comedy series is two seasons of absolute perfection, and as such earned Waller-Bridge worldwide acclaim as an actress and a writer, including three Primetime Emmys for the stupendous second season.
Now, Colman’s got The Crown; Waller-Bridge is writing the Bond movie No Time to Die. But both took time out to reteam for charity. Specifically, they’ve reunited to form the greatest band my imagination could ever conceive to help fundraise for BBC Children in Need.
Colman, whose smile is so warm it might be responsible for melting the ice caps, nervously admits before recording, “This is the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I’d rather give birth again with no drugs than do this.” Then, she’s amazing. Because, of course, she is.
With no further ado, here’s your favorite English actresses performing a cover of Portishead’s “Glory Box”:
BBC Children in Need has officially released the celebrity-stuffed album, We’ve Got It Covered, which features not only Colman and the Waller-Bridge sisters, but also Jodie Wittaker, David Tennant, Himesh Patel, Luke Evans, and Helena Bonham Carter. Purchase it here, you know, for kids.
