Today is Michelle Obama's birthday. I don't usually go out of my way to acknowledge the birthdays of complete strangers, but for Michelle, I'll make an exception. Happy birthday, Michelle! I hope you are having a great day. Michelle turned 55 today and has had the kind of big year that would mark some sort of pinnacle for most mere mortals. But for Michelle, having the The Washington Post claim her memoir Becoming is "one of the fastest-selling nonfiction titles ever and promises to become one of the best-selling political memoirs of all time", that it's sold over 3 million copies, and been the first book to kick Fifty Shades Of Grey's butt over on Amazon by sitting in the #1 spot the longest, probably only ranks as her 5th or 6th most notable year.
However, having recently completed Becoming (I listened to it on audiobook like approximately 70 bajilliondy other people), I know that for many of those other notable years, Michelle's voice was carefully and surgically deployed in the service of her family, her husband, and her country. While still measured and considered, with Becoming, Michelle gets to use her voice to sing her own damn song. And it's my jam.
Lots of people besides myself have taken time to wish Michelle a happy birthday today. Of course he was obligated to to do it, but Barak's message was clearly from the heart. He shared a sweet photo from the wayback machine.
I knew it way back then and I'm absolutely convinced of it today -- you're one of a kind, @MichelleObama. Happy Birthday! pic.twitter.com/ejqm0uC9J4

And naturally, there were plenty of folks in DC who wanted to show Michelle some love too.

Beyoncé even gave up some prime Instagram real estate to honor Michelle.
But to me, the real beauty is that it's not just blue checked celebrities and political big wigs wanting to express their admiration. Regular old Americans took time to acknowledge Michelle's big day with heartfelt messages of appreciation and support. Well before anyone ever opened her book, Michelle herself, was been an open book. Throughout her tenure as FLOTUS, we always knew where Michelle's heart was. It was right there on her sleeve.
@MichelleObama I hope you had a wonderful birthday. I miss you and your family so much!
