Michael Che was apparently originally supposed to appear at the Kevin Hart Roast last Sunday night, but pulled out due to “scheduling difficulties” with SNL. Apparently, there was a lot of movement on the dais in the days preceding the roast.
But just because he didn’t appear doesn’t mean that Michael Che doesn’t have some thoughts on it, which he shared on Instagram yesterday. “White guys and black people joke different,” he said. “Black people roast like, ‘Look at this ———‘s shoes.’” Meanwhile, he added, “White roasts are like ‘slavery, math, slain teens, sex crimes, slurs, family secrets.’”
Clearly, Che was referring to the likes of Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe, who did appear to use the roast as an opportunity to see how much racism they could get away with. (Gillis, for instance, made a joke about how Kevin Hart would have to be lynched from a bonsai tree. Because he’s short, see.)
“White guys don’t give a ———- about they shoes,” Che added.
In a separate post, Che also wrote, “Let’s do a roast celebrating the career of the most successful Black comic in the last 10 years. I love that! Who should we get to write it?” And then he showed a picture of five of the writers, all of whom were white: Nick Mullen, J.P. McDade, Mike Lawrence, Dan St. Germain and Zac Amico. “Come on, that’s not funny,” he wrote.
Is Michael Che suggesting that white people should not be writing racist jokes for other white people at the roast of a Black comedian? I would almost call that “woke” of him, except that he’d hate that, and I don’t want to undercut the very valid point he’s making.
