I’m going to be upfront here: Either Pete Davidson is extremely brave, or my man is crashing out. It might honestly be both because Davidson went absolutely nuclear with his jabs at Tony Hinchcliffe during Netflix’s The Roast of Kevin Hart on Sunday night. I’m talking Davidson went places that are already making headlines, which are either going to be great for him or very, very bad.
For those of you who blissfully forget, Hinchcliffe is the “comedian” who dropped a “joke” about Puerto Ricans at the MAGA Madison Square Garden rally ahead of the 2024 election. Well, Davidson did not waste an opportunity to equate Tony with a certain political figure whose death became the basis for several witch hunts that saw Jimmy Kimmel pulled off the air. Granted, that fervor has significantly died down, but Pete’s roast performance is one way to pour gasoline over everything.
We’re a small, independent site, so out of an abundance of caution, I’m going to link out to The Hollywood Reporter instead of repeating what Davidson said here. As you’ll see, he went right for it — including taking a shot at Kanye — and it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
On the one hand, this is how comedy roasts have always been. It’s a bunch of comics trying to one up each other by gleefully crossing every line possible. Davidson’s jabs are squarely in that vein, and he could easily just be playing with one of the most taboo subjects possible. I’m 70% positive that’s the case.
The other 30% can’t help but notice that this took place on the heels of recent headlines that Davidson and Elsie Hewitt are working through relationship issues after welcoming a baby girl in December. With that information in the mix, it does make you wonder if Davidson was just doing what roast comics do or if this was a precursor to something darker. Again, I’m torn.
Pete might have taken a brave and necessary run at a toadie like Hinchcliffe, or he could be lighting his own career on fire. Really hoping it’s that first one.
